2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 61 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Older doors are usually thicker and made of solid wood, which is good news. They take a deadbolt well, hold longer strike screws, and reward reinforcement. The locksmith measures the thickness and backset so new hardware fits without fresh holes.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census). In areas of mixed housing, landlords may own a house here and a few units there. A locksmith can put all of it under one master system so the owner carries one key while each tenant's key opens only their own door.

Home Lockout Service

Technician in a cap and hooded sweatshirt using a small screwdriver on the lever handle and lock case of a glass door. — Cootes Paradise
The call
The moving truck has left, half the boxes are inside, and the single key the previous owner handed over turns the knob but not the deadbolt. Someone locked it on the way out, and nobody has a key that fits it.

Seized & Jammed Lock Opening

Person holding two lock cylinders beside an open painted door, with loose hardware and debris on the sill. — Seized & Jammed Lock Opening, Cootes Paradise
The call
The key turns a full circle without any resistance and the deadbolt stays exactly where it is. There is no click, nothing moves behind the face of the lock, and the door is as closed as it was before you touched it.

Lock Rekeying

Hands holding a lock cylinder and a ring of keys above a worn workbench with another cylinder and loose keys. — Lock Rekeying, Cootes Paradise
The call
One key for the front door, another for the back, a third for the side door into the garage, and a fourth for the shed. You stand on the step every evening flipping through them in the dark, trying each one until something turns.

Gate & Building Entry Locks

Detached rim gate lock and separate box keeper on an outdoor workbench. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Cootes Paradise
The call
Someone pried at the gate latch overnight, and now the strike plate hangs by one screw and the cylinder spins loose in its housing. The gate still closes, technically, but a firm shoulder is all it would take to open it from outside.

Most forced entries go through the strike and frame, not the cylinder, so this group treats the door as one assembly: hardened bolt, deep strike, three-inch screws, sound hinges, and a cylinder that defeats picks and drills on top of all that.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

The lever on the side door droops toward the floor and rattles in your hand. The latch no longer springs back on its own, so the door drifts open behind you unless you pull it shut and check it twice.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

The bolt on the front door is keyed on both sides. Getting out at night means finding the key in the dark, and with a toddler in the house you have decided the inside should turn by hand.

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

They did not get in. The attempt left a screwdriver gouge in the door edge, a strike plate bent outward and a deadbolt that now needs a shove to throw.

What to expect, answered

Is a double-cylinder deadbolt a good idea after a lockout?

A deadbolt keyed on both sides is sometimes suggested for doors with glass beside them, but on a main escape door it means finding a key to get out. A door people use to leave the home should open from the inside without a key or special knowledge, especially in an emergency. A single-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn, paired with a reinforced strike and a proper glass film if needed, keeps both security and a clear way out.

Does road salt affect door locks?

Yes, especially on side doors near a treated driveway or walkway. Salt spray dries into a crust inside the keyway and around the plug, and each thaw dissolves and re-deposits it deeper. Over a few winters it pits brass and makes the pins drag. The remedy is a flush with contact cleaner, a thorough drying, and a dry lubricant that sheds moisture, followed by rinsing the hardware when the weather allows.

Do the old keys really stop working?

Yes, at every cylinder that was rekeyed. Once the bottom pins are changed, a key cut to the old combination lifts them to the wrong heights and the plug will not turn. The locksmith proves this at each door by trying the old key after the new one, because any door missed from the list would still answer to the old key. That is also why the walk around the property at the start matters: every door meant to be included has to be on the list.

How long does a gate or building entry lock visit usually take?

It depends on what the assessment finds once the locksmith is looking at the actual hardware. A single gate lock that only needs adjusting or rekeying is a shorter visit than one where the closer, hinges and post all need attention, or where several gates on a property are being brought onto one key. Electronic hardware such as a buzzer or electric strike adds its own testing time. The locksmith can give a closer sense of the scope once the gate or door has been examined in person.
