Is a double-cylinder deadbolt a good idea after a lockout?
A deadbolt keyed on both sides is sometimes suggested for doors with glass beside them, but on a main escape door it means finding a key to get out. A door people use to leave the home should open from the inside without a key or special knowledge, especially in an emergency. A single-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn, paired with a reinforced strike and a proper glass film if needed, keeps both security and a clear way out. Home Lockout Service
Will opening our glass storefront door damage it?
In almost every case the door, the glass and the lock are untouched. The mortise cylinder in the narrow stile is picked or decoded so the cam turns exactly as it would for your key, and the hookbolt or latch withdraws. Drilling comes up when a cylinder has seized, is packed with a broken key, or its security features and condition rule out a clean non-destructive opening, and if it comes to that you hear about it first and a new cylinder goes in during the same visit. Should I rekey or replace the lock afterwards?
Only if the inspection finds a reason. A clean cylinder with sound pins goes straight back to work with a new key. Rekeying makes sense when the pins are worn and sticking, or when a lost or unaccounted key shares the same cut. Replacement is for a cylinder that is corroded, cracked or of a grade that will keep eating keys. Each is offered as its own decision, not bundled in. Broken Key Extraction
I rent. Who arranges the repair, and can I change the lock myself?
Tell your landlord or property manager as soon as the police have been called; provincial tenancy law makes the landlord responsible for repairs to the unit, and most will arrange the locksmith. A tenant may not change locks without the landlord's agreement, and a landlord who changes them must give the tenant keys, so the visit is coordinated between you. If you arrange securing yourself in an emergency, keep the receipt and the record of what was done for both sides. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
Do the old keys really stop working?
Yes, at every cylinder that was rekeyed. Once the bottom pins are changed, a key cut to the old combination lifts them to the wrong heights and the plug will not turn. The locksmith proves this at each door by trying the old key after the new one, because any door missed from the list would still answer to the old key. That is also why the walk around the property at the start matters: every door meant to be included has to be on the list. Lock Rekeying
What do backset and bore mean, and why does the locksmith ask?
Two measurements decide whether a deadbolt fits your door. Bore is the diameter of the big hole through the face, 54 mm on most current hardware. Backset is how far the centre of that hole sits from the door's edge, 60 mm or 70 mm on nearly all residential doors. A replacement must match both to use the existing holes, and a fresh installation is cut to match the knob below, so knowing them ahead puts the right hardware on the van. Deadbolt Installation
Should I rekey my locks or replace them?
Rekey when the hardware is sound and the problem is the key: a lost copy, a move, or too many keys for one house. Replace when the mechanism itself is worn, the housing or bolt is damaged, the grade was never suitable for the entrance, or you want a different function, finish or a keypad. Many visits do both, keeping good locks and rekeying them while replacing the tired ones, all to one key. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?
Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead. High Security Locks
Is a mechanical dial or an electronic keypad the better choice for a business safe?
Each suits a different way of working. A mechanical dial has no battery to fail and a long service life, but only ever holds one combination at a time. An electronic keypad allows separate codes for different staff and an audit trail on some models, at the cost of needing battery changes. Either can be fitted with a genuinely high security rating; the choice usually comes down to how many people need independent access. Safe Opening & Combination Change
Can a safe hold both cash and paper documents at the same time?
Yes, though it is worth knowing the interior conditions suited to each are slightly different. Paper gains real heat protection from a fire-rated lining, but that same sealed lining traps humidity, so paper stored inside needs the same periodic airing and a desiccant packet as any fire-rated interior. Cash and other valuables mainly need the tool resistance of the body and door and tolerate the sealed environment more easily. A single well-chosen unit can hold both together without conflict, particularly with paper kept in a sealed folder or bag inside. Safe Installation & Servicing
What proof do I need to show before locks are changed?
The locksmith confirms that the person ordering the work is entitled to change the locks: the owner, a tenant with the landlord's agreement, or a property or facilities manager for a business. Photo identification and something linking you to the address usually settle it, and for a company a letter or a call to the named contact does the same. It protects you as much as anyone, since the same check stops someone else from changing your locks. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
We are a landlord with a tenant leaving. When should the unit be rekeyed?
Between tenants is the ideal moment: the departing tenant has handed back their keys, the new one has not yet received any, and the unit is empty for the work. The incoming tenant then starts on keys nobody else has held, and the landlord's own master or emergency key is set up at the same time. Where a lease has ended in dispute, the locksmith asks to see the paperwork before changing locks on a unit that still holds a tenant's goods. Commercial Rekeying
Can electronic locks be part of the same system as mechanical keys?
Yes. Where a property mixes keypad or card doors with mechanical cylinders, the access levels are designed to line up across both, so a department sitting at one sub-master level mechanically holds a matching level electronically. Mechanical override cylinders behind an electronic lock are pinned into the same chart as every other door, so one record still describes the whole property. Master Key System Design
Is a keypad code as secure as a card or fob?
A keypad code needs no card to lose, but a code shared among several people is effectively no longer individual, and a forgotten code left active is a common weak point. A card or fob tied to one named person avoids that particular issue, since it is switched off individually rather than reset for everyone at once. Many businesses use a code for general areas and a card wherever entry needs to be traceable to one person. Access Control Installation
What is dogging, and can every door have it?
Dogging holds the device's latch retracted so the door works as a simple push-pull for a period, useful during business hours on a busy entrance. It is not available on fire-rated openings, because a fire door must keep an active latch at all times; on those doors, electric latch retraction achieves a similar push-pull convenience without ever leaving the latch mechanically held back. Car Keys
It is a rental or a company vehicle. Can you open it for me?
Yes, with the paperwork that fits. For a rental, the agreement in your name plus photo identification does the job; the rental company's roadside line may also want a call, and the locksmith can leave a written note of what was done for the return desk. For a company vehicle, a fleet manager or supervisor who can confirm you are assigned to it settles the question, and the same note keeps the fleet's records straight. Car Lockout Service
Can you make a key for a car with push-button start?
On many vehicles, yes: a proximity fob is registered to the vehicle through the diagnostic port in much the same way as a transponder key, and then tested for passive entry at the handles and for starting with the fob in a pocket. Other systems pair a proximity fob through onboard, app-based or dealer-only steps instead. The emergency blade tucked inside the fob is cut to the door lock so you have a mechanical way in, and the VIN check reveals in advance which route a given vehicle needs. Car Key Replacement
What identification do I need to bring for a vehicle that isn't mine, like a company car?
Bring whatever document shows your connection to the vehicle in that situation: a company letter or fleet record for a workplace vehicle, a lease agreement for a rented one, or a note from the registered owner for a family member's car. The locksmith is confirming that the person asking for a key is entitled to hold one, which protects the vehicle's owner as much as it protects you. Spare Car Key Duplication
What if my vehicle turns out to need dealer-only programming?
Some manufacturers restrict fob programming to a security-gated procedure that only a dealer system or an approved access pathway can complete. When a vehicle falls into that category, the visit identifies it early, explains what the vehicle specifically requires, and documents anything already confirmed, such as a compatible fob, so the eventual dealer visit is not starting the diagnosis over from nothing.
