Home Lockout Service

The key slides in and turns all the way round, but the bolt stays put. There is no click, no resistance, just a key spinning in a lock that has stopped listening to it after years of daily use.

In plain words

Winter creates its own kind of lockout. Meltwater runs into a keyway during the day and freezes overnight, a weather-exposed cylinder stiffens in the cold, and a door that shrank in January may drop its bolt out of line with the strike. A home lockout visit in these conditions is as much about the door as the lock: the locksmith thaws and frees the cylinder without forcing it, checks whether the bolt or the frame is the real obstacle, and opens the door in a way that leaves the hardware sound. A little dry lubricant and a tube of de-icer usually finish the job.

The call
The keypad on the smart lock blinks once and goes dark. The batteries have finally given up, your phone is at four percent, and the little backup key that came in the box is in a kitchen drawer on the other side of the door.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

    Reading the lock itself

Every lock announces what it is to someone who knows where to look. The shape of the keyway, the maker's mark on the face, the presence of a thumb-turn or a second keyed side, and whether the door has a separate deadbolt above a latching knob all tell the locksmith which family of hardware they are dealing with. A residential pin-tumbler cylinder, a mortise case in a century home, a restricted keyway with security pins and a keypad lock with a hidden override each respond to different techniques. Identifying the lock correctly before touching it is what makes a clean, non-destructive opening the usual outcome.

  2. Scene 2

When drilling is the right answer

Occasionally a cylinder is seized, badly worn, packed with a broken key or built to resist picking to a degree that makes it impractical. In that case the locksmith explains, before starting, that the cylinder will be sacrificed and replaced. The drilling is aimed precisely at the shear line so the plug can turn, which keeps the damage to the cylinder alone and leaves the door, the trim and the bolt untouched. A new cylinder or complete deadbolt is fitted in the same visit, new keys are cut and tested, and the old hardware is handed to you or taken away as you prefer. You leave with a working, lockable door, not a temporary patch.

  3. Scene 3

Ready for the next cold snap

After a winter lockout you leave with a cylinder that has been dried and dressed with a moisture-shedding lubricant, and usually a small tube of lock de-icer for the glove box or coat pocket. Keeping the storm door closed shields the main lock from freezing rain, and a simple keyhole cover on an exposed side door stops meltwater getting in during a thaw. If the door itself was frozen to its seal, the weatherstripping has been cleared and a light silicone wipe on it stops it bonding to the door again. These small habits carry most households through a whole season of freeze and thaw without another stuck morning.

What shapes the quoteBuchanan Lock Services

Restricted or high-security keyways
Security pins, sidebars and patented keyways take longer to open and, if replaced, cost more as hardware than a standard cylinder. Restricted keys also have to be cut from the system's records rather than duplicated.
Number of new keys cut
Keys cut on site are counted into the quote individually. Two for a couple, five for a family with teenagers and a dog walker: say how many you want and the total follows.
Time of the call
A home lockout costs the same amount whatever the hour, weekend or holiday included, since locksmiths are reachable day and night. The exact figure is confirmed at the door once the lock, the door and how many locks need opening have been looked at in person.

What to expect, answered

Is a double-cylinder deadbolt a good idea after a lockout?

A deadbolt keyed on both sides is sometimes suggested for doors with glass beside them, but on a main escape door it means finding a key to get out. A door people use to leave the home should open from the inside without a key or special knowledge, especially in an emergency. A single-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn, paired with a reinforced strike and a proper glass film if needed, keeps both security and a clear way out.

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?

Rekeying keeps the lock you have and changes only the pins inside the cylinder so a new key operates it and the old one no longer does. It suits hardware that is in good shape and simply needs a fresh key. Replacing swaps the whole lock or cylinder for new hardware, which makes sense when the existing lock is worn, damaged, of low grade, or when you want a different style or a keypad. Either can be done during a lockout visit.

My key turns but the door stays locked. What is going on?

A key that spins freely without moving the bolt usually means the connection between the cylinder and the bolt has failed: the tailpiece or cam at the back of the cylinder has broken or slipped, or the internal parts of an older mortise lock have worn. The good news is that this is a hardware fault rather than a lost key, so once the door is opened the fix is a repaired or replaced cylinder and your keys keep working.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 61 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Basement and side entries on older homes were often fitted long after the house was built, with whatever lock was on hand. Bringing those doors up to the standard of the front entry, and onto the same key, is a common and satisfying job.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census).Where housing is mixed, the same street can hold a solid wood front door, a steel townhouse door and a metal-clad suite door. A locksmith fits each with hardware suited to its construction, so every neighbour ends up with a door that locks properly.
