Seized & Jammed Lock Opening

The shop's lever handle goes down as usual, but the latch inside the mortise case never pulls back. Staff are waiting on the sidewalk with their coffees, the door is locked, and the handle is simply moving air.

In plain words

A lock rarely seizes without warning. It asks for a wiggle, then a firmer wiggle, then it needs the door pulled toward you, and one morning it stops. Seized and jammed lock opening deals with that morning, but the same visit deals with the months before it. The locksmith explains why this lock jammed, whether it was grit, weather, a worn key or a door that moved, and leaves you with a lubrication routine, a fresh key cut from code rather than from a tired copy, and a door that closes without a shove. The point is a lock that turns with two fingers and keeps doing so.

The call
It is the coldest morning of the winter and the key goes halfway into the side door and stops. There is frost on the face of the cylinder, and the door on the shaded side of the house has done this before.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

Which of the three families it belongs to

Every jammed lock falls into one of three groups, and sorting it is the whole diagnosis. A key that enters fully and will not turn points to the cylinder: grit, ice, corrosion, dried lubricant or a plug that has not returned to its neutral position with the shell. A key that turns freely and moves nothing points to the connection behind the cylinder, the tailpiece or cam, or to a broken hub in a mortise case. A key that works only when the door is pushed, pulled or lifted points past the lock entirely to the door and its strike. Each group has its own opening method and its own repair.

  2. Scene 2

Opening when the tailpiece has failed

A key that spins freely means the cylinder is fine and the bar behind it, the tailpiece or cam, has broken, slipped or twisted out of engagement. The bolt is then retracted directly through the mechanism rather than through the cylinder, or the cylinder is withdrawn so the locksmith can reach the bolt drive. Once the door is open the old tailpiece is removed and a replacement of the correct length and profile is fitted, since one that is too short repeats the fault and one that is too long binds. The cylinder goes back, the retaining screws are checked, and the bolt is thrown and retracted with the key until it moves cleanly through its full travel.

  3. Scene 3

For a business: a door the staff can rely on

On a commercial door the handover includes the people who use it. Whoever opens in the morning is shown how the lever, key and cylinder now behave, and the exit side is demonstrated so everyone knows the door opens from inside with one motion. If the mortise case was serviced, the parts that were replaced are named so a future locksmith knows what is in there. A note of which keys were tested and who holds them supports whatever key control the business runs. Spare keys are checked in the lock before they go back in the safe.

What shapes the quoteBuchanan Lock Services

Door and hinge adjustment
When the door caused the jam, hinge screws, shims, a strike move or a deepened bolt pocket are quoted as their own line beside the opening.
Mortise and commercial hardware
Drawing a mortise case, replacing a hub or spring and regreasing the contact points is more involved than a cylinder service, and storefront and exit hardware are quoted accordingly.
Inside door or outside door
A jammed bedroom or office privacy lock is generally a lighter job than a weather-exposed exterior deadbolt, and a mortise lock on an interior door sits between the two.

What to expect, answered

Does road salt affect door locks?

Yes, especially on side doors near a treated driveway or walkway. Salt spray dries into a crust inside the keyway and around the plug, and each thaw dissolves and re-deposits it deeper. Over a few winters it pits brass and makes the pins drag. The remedy is a flush with contact cleaner, a thorough drying, and a dry lubricant that sheds moisture, followed by rinsing the hardware when the weather allows.

Why do locks jam more in winter?

Two reasons meet in the same season. Freeze-thaw weather sends meltwater into the keyway by day and freezes it by night, and cold thickens any old grease or oil that has been sprayed into the pins. At the same time dry, heated indoor air shrinks wood doors so bolts move in their pockets. Doors on the shaded or windward side get the worst of it. A dry lubricant, a keyhole cover and a check of the strike after the first hard frost take care of most of it.

My key turns all the way round but the bolt stays put. What has broken?

The key and cylinder are doing their job; the bar behind the cylinder that drives the bolt, called the tailpiece or cam, has broken, slipped or twisted out of engagement. It is a small part. The locksmith retracts the bolt through the mechanism or removes the cylinder to reach it, then fits a tailpiece of the right length and profile. Your cylinder and keys are unchanged afterwards.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 61 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Old brass keys wear thin, and a key that has bent for years finally lets go in a cold cylinder. In older housing stock this is a regular call, so the locksmith is ready to extract the piece, check the cylinder and cut a new key from the code.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census).Where houses and attached homes share an area, lockouts are as varied as the doors. A porch, a hallway or a shared vestibule each calls for a slightly different approach, and a locksmith used to all three arrives ready for whichever it is.
